This past Sunday across America, the 78th Golden Globe Awards, one of the most honored awards in American television and film, took place. The Golden Globes is an award ceremony where awards are given on behalf of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The first Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place in 1944 in Los Angeles, California. Being nominated for the Golden Globes is a significant deal and a huge honor. Unlike the Grammys, Oscars, and Tony’s, the Golden Globes specifically recognize the film and television industry. This year, the Golden Globe awards recognized the categories of best actor in a motion picture, best actress in a drama motion picture, and best television series comedy. Those are only a few categories that were recognized this year at the Golden Globes. The nominated winner of best actor in a motion picture was Chadwick Boseman, the best actress in a drama motion picture was Andra Day, and the best television series comedy was Schitt’s Creek. Other recognized awards include, Nomanland winning the category for drama motion picture, Jodie Foster taking home the award of the best-supporting actress in a motion picture, and Daniel Kaluuya winning the category of the best supporting actor in a motion picture.

The nominees for the best actor in a motion picture were: Chadwick Boseman, Riz Ahmed, Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, and Tahar Rahim. While Chadwick Boseman won the award he, unfortunately, passed away in early August. However, he was still recognized for his success in the movie “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” This movie shows the life of famous blues singer Ma Rainey and her band of talented musicians. The movie also explored the history of American Music. In this film, Boseman played the role of Levee Green, a talented black musician, and songwriter that hoped to share the reality of black musicians in the 1920s through music. Before this film in 2020, Boseman starred in many other well-known movies such as Black Panther, and Avengers: Endgame. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in early 2016 which ultimately led to his death in 2020. There is no doubt that Boseman made a huge impact on the film and television industry and he is still recognized for his amazing work and dedication.

Along with the best actor, the best actress is a very honorable award to receive. This year, the winner of this category was Andra Day. She was running against Viola Davis, Vanessa Kirby, Frances McDormand, and Carey Mulligan. Day was awarded for her role in the movie “The United States vs. Billie Holiday”. This intriguing film is based on the federal government’s targets towards Billie Holiday and her controversial song “Strange Fruit”. The movie shows a vivid representation of how Holiday advocated for the civil rights movement through music. Day played the role of Billie Holiday, the singer struggling to fight for civil rights. Not only was Day recognized as the best actress, but she was also the first African American best actress winner in 35 years.

Seminole High School Sophomore Michelle Lopez states “When I first saw this film available, I didn’t think it would be anything amazing, but by the end of the film my breath was taken away by the portrayal of the real-life struggles African Americans face daily in the 1940s and still today, I believe Andra Day was the perfect actress for this role and she deserves this award.”

Lastly, Schitt’s Creek was awarded best television series comedy. The other nominations in this category were: Emily in Paris, The Flight Attendant, The Great, and Ted Lasso. This series is about a wealthy family who loses their fortune after being defrauded by their business manager. They have to face the struggles of finding somewhere to stay and finding a new lifestyle. This comedy-style show first aired on Jan. 13, 2015, and ended in April of 2020. There are six intriguing seasons available on streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Seminole High School IB Senior Kruthi Munigeti states “I loved the dry humor of the show, and I liked how the characters were shallow at first but their experiences helped them grow.”

Being awarded a Golden Globe will leave almost anybody in tears and will be remembered for the rest of their lives. We want to congratulate all of the winning nominees and wish them the best of luck on the life-changing accomplishment in their careers.
