It’s that last year for our seniors to end their high school careers with a bang, and for some, that includes participating in one of the most popular upperclassmen traditions of all time; running for homecoming court.
As soon as Seminole High School (SHS) gave students approval via email to officially begin the nomination process, excitement buzzed across campus, and dozens of seniors began to endorse themselves to their friends and fellow classmates. It was the hottest topic of the week, and the most anticipated question of all was this: who would be the ten lucky students to make it on the ballot?
Now, those who have been nominated have finally been revealed, but the show is far from over. It’s a race against the clock, a game of who can rack up the most votes before the upcoming deadline and be crowned as Seminole’s homecoming king and queen of 2024. Seniors, it’s up to you to decide who to choose!
The candidates this year are as follows:
Male Nominees:
Jack Pavlak
Nathan Prowell
Austin Bishop
Liam Allen
Josh Mariano
Female Nominees:
Caroline Brown
Gianna Diaz
Christine Doria
Selena Awwad
Mackenly Germain
We asked some of these students about their experiences in running so far, and below are some of the responses they shared.
Mackenly Germain, a member of Art Club and a previous Junior Class Council Member, tells us why she decided to run. “I like being involved in our school’s activities. I wanted to go full out for my senior year and do the most [that] I can with my friends!”
“My campaign methods were social media videos and posters,” she explains. “I also let each [of my] classes know to vote for me.” When Germain found out that she was voted to be a nominee, she says that she was both surprised and excited. “I was glad that I made it, since there were so many people running for court. It was definitely shocking, I didn’t think I was going to make it.”
Germain makes a lasting impact with her final statement. “I think that readers should vote for me as homecoming queen because I am vibrant, fun, and very willing to help others. I have a lot of school spirit and love to contribute to our school in many different ways. I am very dedicated and want what’s best for us all.”
Joshua Mariano is an IB student also running for homecoming court this year, and is the founder and president of Nu Gamma, the vice president of Amnesty International at SHS, and the vice president of Chess Club. He chose to run to “push his marketing abilities to their fullest extent.”
“Before starting, I made a team that now holds around 25 people and made a spreadsheet of all of the possible demographics each candidate would naturally gain dominion over,” he explains. “Then, my campaign team and I looked at previous well performing creatives on social media that fostered engagement and identification with a person or topic. Because of the amount of people I had on the task and the foresight to plan ahead, I believe I was able to dominate the social media sphere.”
Mariano is fairly confident in his abilities. “I feel like I represent the school very well. If you’re voting for Josh, you’re voting for a visionary and a man that’s actually for the people.”
The last day to vote for your homecoming king and queen is Wednesday, October 2nd at 4:00 PM. The winners will be announced the following Friday (October 4th) at halftime during the homecoming game, so don’t miss out on your chance to vote! Have a happy homecoming week, and as always, go Noles!
