Horror movies have a controversial opinion; people either love them, or hate them. Most of them, however, do love them due to their suspense, thrilling plot, and of course, their jumpscares. However, finding a good movie, especially a horror one, can be extremely difficult. Hence, through many students’ opinions, these are the best ranked horror movies.
Conjuring 2: One of the most famous watched horror movie series, based on real life cases. Featuring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, The Conjuring 2 is a thrilling horror film with unexpected plot twists and jumpscares. Patrick and Vera are paranormal investigators who hunt ghosts and demons haunting innocent families. Based on a real life case, a single mother with four kids has been noticing some out of the normal events going on. Fearing a demon, she calls the investigators who quickly confirm it when the daughter begins to show signs of demonic possession. However, separating the demon is proven to be a tough work with much resistance. Part of a three movie series, the fourth is in production and set to release next year, leaving many fans in anticipation.
The Nun: Based on a real life investigator’s experience, this movie is known as one that could change the meaning of horror movies for you. A young nun comes back after taking her own life due to a priest summoning her to investigate her case. Throughout these harrowing adventures, many problems and obstacles arise, ultimately resulting in a face off with a possessed nun, where only one can live. Sasha Cherkuri, a sophomore in Pre-IB, states, “I’m a really big fan of horror movies and the nun is definitely one of the scariest and exciting ones I’ve seen.”
Anabelle: A classic horror movie that’s arguably to this day, one of the best horror movies witnessed. A gift that was supposed to be sweet, unexpectedly turned into one that ended many lives. Anabelle, a doll with a white fancy dress, was sitting in the windowsill when a husband stumbled upon it, searching for a gift for his pregnant wife. However, in a turn no one would have expected, a cult breaks in, performing a ritual that ultimately ends up in summoning a demon in the form of a doll. Signs start appearing through injuries and drawings, causing the parents to soon find out about the demon that resides in their home. Attempts to get rid of the doll appeared unsuccessful, as the doll would always come back.
Smile: More of a thriller movie, smile has made its mark in the industry. A terrifying scene leaves a young woman traumatized and paranoid. Unexplained strange activities occur, causing the woman to go insane and ultimately take her life. However, this has started a series of deaths that leaves people questioning everything. Adored by many , even those who don’t necessarily prefer horror, a sequel is currently in production with its release date set on October 18. Ashley Kuruvilla, a sophomore in Pre-IB, exclaims, “Smile is a classic thriller movie and definitely one of my favorites. I’m really excited to see the new one coming up!”
The Exorcist: Ranked as the number one horror movie providing heart attacks and panic attacks, the exorcist features a young girl who starts to speak in tongues and levitates. The mother, worried for her daughter, seeks for the finest doctors but none can find out what’s wrong with her. A priest, Jason Miller, observes her behavior and suggests an exorcism. The mother, left with no other choice, agrees and the priest and his partner set out to take away the devil. However, it isn’t as easy as it seems with the devil retaliating and obstacles rising.
