On January 23, 2014, the Los Angeles Times confirmed the rumor of that Nicolas “The Cage” Cage will play the role of President Snow’s body guard in the Hunger Games: Mockingjay—Part 2. The part was added because director Frances Lawrence cut scenes that were in the written book, Mockingjay, and instead decided to add a speaking role of President Snow’s body guards.
The rumor has been talked about between Los Angeles directors since his recent outstanding performance in Stolen. The Cage’s last Oscar was won in 1995 for his supporting role in Leaving Las Vegas, but many expect him to receive an Oscar for his coming performance in Mockingjay.
Senior Amber Zapfino said, “Nicolas Cage has truly been an inspiration to me even since I’ve joined thespians my sophomore year. My personal favorite is his performance in Valley Girl; he perfects the role of being a rebellious, carefree teenager.”
Others have also agreed that The Cage is the optimal choice for the role.
“I think that he would fit the role of the revolutionary character because he is a revolutionary actor,” said freshman Frank Didot.
The Cage was able to escape abusive family life in The Bronx of New York after landing his first major role in the movie So You Need Some Time. He played the role of a pizza boy who was unfortunately murdered by a former girlfriend. The Cage landed the role as a young lad after being overheard by a director while he recited his presentation for his English community college project on a subway.
Frances Lawrence officially cast The Cage for the role after learning of his abusive childhood; he thought with his previous exposure to violence he would understand the part he was playing. The Cage told L.A. Times Reporter Fedra Garmond that when he auditioned for the role he had to overcome his childhood nightmares.
Sophomore Brutus Elit commented, “The violence that takes place in Mockingjay will seem like nothing to Nicolas Cage after all he’s been through. I also think it’s great that [The Cage] is trying to expand his audience range to teenagers.”
The Cage will begin filming in December of 2014 after finishing the movies Amicus and Left Behind.
