Bump. Set. Spike!
Volleyball is one of the most popular sports in the world, and people of all ages play it. Whether casual or for competition, the fairly simple rules make it a favored sport across communities.
Volleyball is a typical recreational sport due to its simplicity and inclusivity. At the Sanford Westside Community Center, recreational volleyball games are held in addition to many other community-building activities. The mood is always friendly and laid back, whether it’s a weekend match on the outdoor courts or an evening game in the indoor gym.
On August 25th, the center hosted one of its regular recreational volleyball games. Participants and spectators flooded in, buzzing with anticipation. The teams are diverse and formed outside of the center, with players ranging from newcomers to veterans. The Sunday game was a friendly lower-level match, but the excitement was all the more present. People joked and cheered as they played, curating a positive vibe.
Matt Hibbard, the organizer as well as participant of the frequent games says: “Volleyball is one of my favorite sports, and it’s great to get to meet all these different people who come in for their own reasons. I’ve been running the league for 20 years for this reason.”
The focus on enjoyment allows people to unwind and let go of the past week’s worries. In addition to physical exercise, people get to build connections and maybe even learn valuable skills from others.
“Everyone is super welcoming and kind. Sports and being active in general is really important to me, and being able to participate in this isn’t just good for my physical health, but my mental health too,” says Rebekah Coutts, a recent addition to the league.
The frequent games build a strong community with a welcoming light-hearted environment. NO matter who wins, the participants leave with an optimistic attitude, ready to come back next week. By focusing on fun, inclusivity, and community spirit, the events highlight how recreational games can serve as a vibrant part of community life, promoting fitness and fostering connections among residents. Rather than building competition among players, It’s a chance to let go of worries, if only for a little while, and simply enjoy the present moment.
