The Hindu Student Council (HSC) at Seminole High School (SHS) recently had a new and exciting cultural event to bring students together and celebrate and explore Hindu traditions. This event offered students the chance to learn and to interact with many aspects of Hindu culture.
One of the main highlights of the event was a clay statue-making workshop. Students gathered to mold figures inspired by the Hindu god Genesha. These clay statues provided a visual for all the members there. Council officers helped students through the whole process, but also relayed the story of the God and how important he was to Hindu culture. They also explained the significance of the deities and symbols they were crafting.
In addition to the clay activity, attendees were treated to many Indian foods. They had samosas, Indian juices, and cookies. The food offered a rich taste of Indian culture, and to many, a taste of home. The combination of art and food created a lively and fun experience, allowing students to exercise not only the Hindu religion, but also the literal taste of Hindu culture.
Aarushi Joshi, co-vice president, says, “I wanted to learn more about my own religion, but also wanted to educate others. She adds: “There are clubs and organizations for almost all of the other cultures and religions, so I felt that one for Hinduism was needed.”
One of the student organizers shared that the goal of the event was not only to introduce Hindu traditions, but also to foster a sense of unity and understanding among the diverse student body at SHS.
Joshi explains: “We wanted to create an event that not only showcased our rich Hindu traditions but also brought everyone together, regardless of their background, to learn and appreciate each other’s cultures.”
This celebration of Hindu culture successfully combined art, food, and education, creating an atmosphere of unity and shared learning. Through activities like clay statue making and shared foods, the event connected students with Hindu traditions and with each other the bonds within the SHS community.
They say that they have many events planned for the future, so stay tuned for those and follow their Instagram @seminolehsc!
