The beginning of a new school year unquestionably is the beginning of a whole new set of trends sweeping the halls of Seminole. New fashions, new interests, new music, and even new sports. It’s out with the old and in with the new.
In terms of clothing, bright colors, floral prints, and summery sandals can be seen anywhere on campus. Junior Nora Ghobashy said, “I like all the floral prints,” she added, “I’ve been seeing that a lot. And pencil skirts too.”
Even though the first day of autumn was September 22, bold colors, sandals, and sleeveless collared shirts are still popular among female ‘Noles, especially in a state like Florida where there’s no sign of fall just yet.
When it comes to shoes, Vans and Toms are still quite popular on campus it seems. “Vans never die,” senior Anisha Nazrul commented. “That, and skinny jeans. I’ve still been seeing a lot of skinny jeans on campus. Jeggings are trending too.”
What about the boys? Boys are not too fashion oriented, but certain fashion trends are apparent through how boys have been dressing. “I like cardigans on guys. I’ve been seeing that more this year,” Nazrul stated, referring to the masculine versions of the cardigan that many male ‘Noles seem to be wearing lately.
Unfortunately, boys still seem to be sticking to the oversized T-shirt and sagging pants trend. “I seriously don’t like it when boys sag their pants, but I’ve seen that on campus too. And I’ve seen boys wearing oversized T-shirts,” Nazrul said. For some reason, those trends haven’t seem to have died down, even though some girls aren’t really digging the fashion (hint to boys!).
Sophomore Areesha Ahmad agrees with Nazrul on the sagging style. “I don’t get why boys do it,” she said. “It’s a violation of dress code, but I still see it around sometimes.”
Aside from fashion, plenty of other trends can be seen at SHS. “JanSport backpacks are definitely the most popular,” said Ahmad. “Especially in bright colors like yellow and blue.”
Just like changes in color choices, musical preferences seem to be changing. “More people are getting into dupstep. It’s definitely in.”
In recent music development, K-Pop is another big hit at SHS. ‘Gangnam Style’ by Psy has only helped in launching K-Pop to the top of the list of most liked types of music. It’s now easy to find someone in the hallways humming or singing the song or doing the “horse dance” while goofing around with some friends.
Just like more and more attention is being put into K-Pop and other genres of music, sports are predictably just as popular at Seminole.
“A lot of people are getting into lacrosse.” Nazrul noted. An anonymous sophomore disagreed by saying “People are still paying a lot of attention to basketball. It’s still really popular.”
Whether it is lacrosse, dupstep, or floral prints, trends at SHS are quite a sight and popular among many, all evidence that Seminole’s in for another great year of cool trends and popular, new interests.
