As Elphaba soars up and away on her broomstick, the box office for the Wicked movie adaptation does the same. Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the film shares the untold tale of the “good witch” and the “wicked witch of the west’s” (Glinda and Elphaba) complex friendship before the events of the Wizard of Oz. The movie captured the first half of the fan-favorite play, with the second half set to be released exactly one year later. Elphaba, a unique but powerful individual, explores a new school’s challenges when she is admitted on the spot. Glinda, a popular rich girl, adjusts to having a new roommate, and perhaps a new frenemy. With stunning visuals and powerful vocals, the adaptation captures the breathtaking Broadway play wonderfully. Grande and Erivo’s performance brings tears to your eyes, fully immersing the audience into the magical world of The Wizard of Oz, past the familiar glittery red shoes and yellow brick road. They deliver the emotion and passion the Broadway gave us, however delving deeper into the backstory of the complex characters. Now, the film adaptation brings that same magic to a wider audience, blending the heart of the stage show with the grand scale of a Hollywood production. Check out Wicked in theaters!
