IB STUDENTS HOLD ANNUAL ART SHOW

The IB Visual Arts class is a small but close-knit group of dedicated aspiring artists.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) art students at SHS are not only academically skilled, but artistically talented as well. Yesterday evening, these  students presented their treasured works of art at the Historic Sanford Welcome Center during the annual IB art show.

IB Visual Arts teacher Kathleen Holt is proud to have presented her SL Visual Arts students’ pieces at Monday night’s exhibit.

“It’s an honor to work with such a talented and versatile group of young, developing artists. They are excited and energized every day they come to class,” said Holt.

To earn credit for the three-part IB course, students must participate in the exhibit and display six pieces of art that explore the given theme. The artworks on display have met all of the specific requirements for the exhibit and share a general theme.

Students in SL Visual Arts follow an unconventional mode of study in that they do not read books or get “homework.” Rather, the class of IB Visual Art is mainly dedicated to the actual study of art such as the art’s meaning and artists themselves.

“I think [IB Visual Art] is pretty good because for the most part, we do research for the artists,” said junior Caitlin Chen.

The students find inspiration for their art all around them, thus allowing them to pursue their passion. To them, art is more than just a hobby.

“[Art] is like an escape. It gives me peace of mind and is calming. It’s a form of self expression. I’ve always been exposed to art my entire life and I’ve always enjoyed looking at it and eventually started making it myself,” said junior Priyanka Chandra.

The IB Visual Art class has helped these budding artists in exploring their own forms of art. This art show has had a lasting impact on the art students.

“I feel good. I’ve had a couple of art shows, but I like this art more than the others. In IB Art, it’s more of [art] reflections instead of talent,” said senior Lindsay Brenner.

Ultimately, the art show was a great process for the students to really become artists and find their own niche in art.
