LACROSSE SEASON SPRINGS INTO ACTION
February 19, 2016
The Lady Noles lacrosse team has had an excellent start this year. Both Varsity and JV have won all their games are are prepping to continue their winning streak. Games are usually Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Varsity junior Harper Shadron says, “We’ve been doing really well this year. We’ve won all three of our games with drastic wins like 23-0 or 14-4, which is really good for us.”
During practice, the first 15 minutes is spent on stretching and running drills test cardiorespiratory capacity as a warm-up. The players also practice their using their sticks by conducting throwing and catching drills. To do this, they split into two lines and continuously pass the ball to the person in front of them.
Picking up ground balls is another important skill to master because it allows the team to have possession of the ball for most of the game and betters their chances of scoring. The remainder of the time is spent going over potential plays and performing them in scrimmages, which helps the players to experience practice games and improve their plays at the same time.
Team members weren’t chosen just based on skill. Anyone with the right amount of determination and dedication to lacrosse the team.
Coach Michael Millen says, “I picked the hardest working players that have shown the ability to play the sport to the best of their ability during tryouts.”
Some of the athletes on the team this year are freshmen who already have a fair amount of experience. JV freshman Evelyn Larson, who has been playing lacrosse for four years, says, “I have gone to every conditioning session to prepare for tryouts. I have also embraced each opportunity to get to know my future teammates better to improve team collaboration.”
“I am excited to see how this team grows together and becomes a solid program that other teams in Central Florida get nervous to play against,” adds Millen.
Strengths of the players include speed and agility during running drills. According to many team members, team collaboration is a major task to work on since many of the players are new.
Shadron also says, “Being on the team is like being in a family. I think we’ve really grown and improved together and we hope to become closer as a team.”
The Lady Noles lacrosse team is working hard to ensure that they perform to their best ability this year. With some time and experience, this year’s team will be prepared for the upcoming season.
