On April 29, 2014, Lix Company released its latest project: a pen known as the Lix Pen that will be the smallest and most innovational pen thus manufactured for its ability to create images and words in the third dimension.
Sophomore Arianna Matthewson says, “I think it is amazing how far along we have come in improving technology. Less than a century ago, television was being introduced to the US and now, here we are, with the resources available to write in 3D!”
Since the project’s inception, manufacturers have been consistently raising money on the website Kickstarter.com to fund the research for the Lix Pens. On May 29, 2014, they reached their monetary goal and began working on the development of the pen itself. As of September 1, the project has received a total funding of roughly $1.2 million US dollars with over 8,000 backers.
The Lix, designed by Anton Suvorov, is claimed to function in the same manner as a 3D Printer; the pen melts a hot wax to the point where the user is able to draw and create shapes that will cool down and freeze in position. According to Business Insider, Karyne Levy, this pen is similar to the 3D Doodler pen, with the exception that the Lix Pen is claiming to be “the smallest 3D printing pen in the world”.
“The Lix Pen opens the door to new innovations in the writing and drawing industry,as new ideas can be formed from the Lix Pen.” comments junior Julius Chai.
In a broader scope, the Lix Pen may hold more in store for consumers than just a simple 3D pen. Shane Taylor from 3D Printing Industry, describes 3D printing and writing material as “a new niche […] created where others would inevitably follow”. Lix Pens are, in fact, not the first of their kind. As stated before, a similar 3D pen known as the 3D Doodler pen has been created prior, as well as many others such as 3DYAYA and swissPen. This industry is slowly being developed and improved upon with each new project.
