Many have seen him dancing at pep rallies; he’s always a crowd favorite. Math teacher Mr. Manhar Dalal is known for his awesome dance skills, whether it’s the Cat Daddy or Gangnam style. Students are impressed with Dalal’s dancing, finding it entertaining and amusing.
Dalal, it turns out, submitted a video of his best Gangnam style moments to a major contest seeking skilled dancers. After receiving immense majority votes and winning the contest, Dalal flew out to Los Angeles over spring break to work on a music video production with PSY for a new song.
When asked what motivated him to submit an audition tape, Dalal said, “I have former students that go to college in California. One of my former students has a cousin that works in the music industry. We would always joke about me going into music videos because I’m usually dancing at the pep rallies.” Videos of Dalal dancing at pep rallies can be found on YouTube. “He called me up a month ago telling me to enter some contest his cousin was talking about.”
Dalal explained that his wife encouraged him to finally submit his tap. The Promote Talent Scout Competition requires those who enter to submit a thirty second video of them dancing to Gangnam style. Five people are selected to participate in the latest PSY-inspired K-pop video.
“I found out a few days ago that I’m one of the winners.” Dalal said. During spring break, he flew out to California to meet with the directors of the contest. Dalal and the four other winners may also go on Ellen to dance with her on her show.
Principal Mike Gaudreau said, “We’re very proud and excited to support Mr. Dalal as he ventures into the music video world. We hope he won’t like it too much though,” he joked, “because he’s one of the best math teachers here at Seminole.”
Gaudreau was supportive for the math teacher as they waited a little over a month for the verdict. Upon hearing about his success, Gaudreau congratulated Dalal and was proud the teacher had accomplished his goal; it’s a lesson for students. Gaudreau sees Dalal’s perseverance as an image students can learn from.
The contest began late December with a final deadline just a month later. Contestants uploaded their video to the website, www.promotetalent.net/. It had taken over a month for the producers and staff of the company to receive each submission before they narrowed down their choices to select a winner.
Founder Adam Goldberg was surprised by the talented Dalal but is ecstatic in the final choice. “For a teacher, this man can dance,” said Goldberg. “With as many student fans that he has, I have no doubt he’ll do real well in gaining more supports.”
Sophomore Kevin Guerrerro, and a student of Dalal’s said, “I think it’s awesome that Mr. Dalal gets to be in a music video. He’s like a celebrity.”
If Dalal’s performance goes well in the music video he can earn more opportunities in the music industry as well as film productions. He already has Goldberg as a sponsor. Life doesn’t always go as planned, and sometimes when time moves as quickly as it does, we fail to notice opportunities that always make themselves present. Dalal kept an open mind, and stayed prepared for the moment things would work out for the best.
The video will be released in the summer of 2013.
