During the week of Homecoming, IB/AP math teacher Mr. Manhar Dalal announced his new job. Through an online program called Seek Teachers, Mr. Dalal was offered a job in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Seek Teachers aims to “educat[e] the world” by recruiting teachers from the West and giving them international jobs ranging from nurseries to universities.
Regarding the big move, Mr. Dalal said, “I’m looking forward to exploring; it should be an exciting place to live for a couple of years.”
Mr. Dalal will be teaching mathematics at a public school in Abu Dhabi. Though he will be teaching in English, he did mention his interest in trying to learn some Arabic.
Before Seminole, Mr. Dalal attended Vero Beach High School. There, he was also a member of Mu Alpha Theta, a nationally recognized mathematics organization, team. Going into college, Mr. Dalal had enough college credits to graduate early, which allowed him to pursue his job in education earlier as well.
After college, Mr. Dalal asked IB math teacher Mr. Trung Vong if he could help coach Mu Alpha Theta with him. Mr. Dalal ended up interning with him for a semester.
Mr. Vong said, “He came in with a good understanding of mathematics and was very open to ideas.”
At Seminole, Mr. Dalal taught both AP Calculus and IB students for three years.
Junior Calvin Yeung said, “Mr. Dalal’s classes were a lot of fun. He knew how to keep the lessons interesting.”
Many students enjoyed his class’s relaxed atmosphere. During one of his classes, it was not uncommon to find Mr. Dalal throwing in a math pun or even changing up his accent as he taught a lesson.
Senior Kendall Ruskin, Co-President of Mu Alpha Theta, started at Seminole the same year Mr. Dalal started teaching. She said, “[Mr. Dalal] really helped me with math and I felt comfortable asking him questions.”
Mr. Dalal was in charge of training the pre-calculus students for Mu Alpha Theta competitions. While he did work with other students, Mr. Dalal taught the pre-calculus competition class.
Junior and Vice President of Mu Alpha Theta, Justin Raman, who had Mr. Dalal last year said, “He made Nationals super fun; it’s a memory I will never forget.”
Mr. Dalal said, “It’s been great to instill the love of math.” Over the course of only three years at Seminole High, Mr. Dalal’s laid-back and sarcastic teaching style has made him a favorite among many students.
Besides his mathematics, much of this school knows Mr. Dalal for his infamous Cat Daddy skills. Mr. Dalal participated in the annual teacher dance-off held during the homecoming pep rally. Not only did he simply show off his skills, but he also won the competition for two consecutive years.
Mr. Dalal said, “I love Seminole High; I’m going to miss it a lot. I wouldn’t be leaving if it weren’t a fantastic opportunity.”
