A chilling confession spilled, leading to the arrest of the two infamous brothers, the Menendez brothers. One of the most well known cases inspiring documentaries and movies, full of unexpected twists, turns and controversial opinions. Decades after the case closed, new evidence is brought into light with the Menendez brothers fighting for their freedom with millions behind them.
Residing in Beverly Hills, Jose and Kitty Menendez had their many flaws, but no one suspected how deep they ran, and no one could have predicted the disturbing events taking place in the picture perfect home.
The case begins the moment Lyle Menendez is born on January 10, 1968. The youngest brother, Erik Menendez, shortly followed in 1970 on November 27. From the beginning, the boys were born into a world of assault, sexual abuse, and mental abuse.
From the start, Jose and Kitty Menendez were interesting people, to say the least. Jose constantly had affairs in front of his wife, who was unable to leave him due to his power and money. However, she wasn’t a victim either. Helping Jose abuse and SA the kids providing them with a lifetime of trauma.
Growing up, Lyle and Erik were expected to excel in anything they did. Their parents also spoiled them, resulting in the brothers stealing thousands from homes. However, when they were caught, their dad was only mad that they got caught. However, he did hire a therapist for them called Doctor Jerome Oziel.
On the faithful day of August 28, 1989, a crime would soon be known by millions of people. That night, a phone call was placed by the brothers, and the house was soon covered in red tape. Jose and Kitty Menendez were found lying dead with multiple shots. Jose was shot 6 times and one final time in the head, and Kitty was shot 10 times trying to escape. Due to the parent’s enormous popularity, however, the police marked off the case as a mob attack.
However, suspicions soon arose when the brothers started living a lavish life. Still continuing with their daily sessions of therapy, Lyle, ridden with emotions, confessed to the murder. Violating patient confidentiality, Jerome was soon found explaining Lyle’s confession, leading to the revoking of his license and the arrest of the brothers.
Their lawyer argued relentlessly, claiming that their motive was only to escape the harrowing life the brothers were born into. Although, it appeared that the judge already had a vendetta against them, dismissing their argument and sentencing them to life with no parole. 3 decades later new evidence came to light along with the support from millions of fans.
The dean finally relents, reopening the infamous case. The case gained so much attention that shows and movies were created based on it.
A sophomore, Izzy Gallego, explains: “I think the show depicted them with a lot of compassion in the start, but later it made it seem like the murder was premeditated. Even though that isn’t true, and we can see that in prison they were also helping other inmates resolve fights.”
Mia Sims, a sophomore in Health, says: “when you’re put through so much, somethings are going to end up happening, but I think that they should be released.”
The dean, after reviewing the case, finally conceded and agreed that they deserve a resentencing with parole. However, since they were underage when the crime was committed and had already served 3 decades in prison, they should be released right away.
Now millions of people wait in anticipation as the retrial fast approaches, deciding if the brothers will be able to walk free and finally have peace.
