A question has risen around school after students have seen a number of seniors wearing a black-and-orange award ribbon with pins on them: What is Tribe? Tribe is a principal’s organization council for seniors that has been around for many years but because it’s such a secret around SHS that most students don’t know what it is.
Tribe is a group of the top students at Seminole High School. They usually are leaders and represent Seminole High School to the highest standards. Tribe members don’t need to be straight-A students, but they must be reliable and responsible. The new Tribe members consists of seniors that Mr. Gaudreau, the previous principal, has chosen.
“Mr. Don Reynolds was the principal who started Tribe, and it was to honor and acknowledge students [and] about one or two teachers for contributions to the school. Back then you got a headband and pen, for your membership. It was just an honor,” said former Tribe Member Mrs. Jane Cooper.
Tribe members were inducted in October. Tribe members were chosen based on how they represent the characteristics of the ultimate SHS student. They show leadership, school spirit, sportsmanship, and great attitudes.
“Tribe is a ‘secret’ school organization run by Dr. Collins. We have ten members right now and we plan to elect a few members each month. Tribe’s main goal is to make Seminole High School a better place. I like it because I get to voice my opinions on how to make the school a friendlier place,” said Tribe Member Jackson Baker.
The seniors that were chosen for Tribe are expected to be role models around Seminole and give a helping hand to any student in need.
Student Body President and Tribe Member Divya Dhulipala said, “I’m honored to be a part of such an talented and diverse group of seniors that are a microcosm of our senior class.”
Meetings will be held once a month or every three weeks. At the meeting they will talk about what’s going on at Seminole and give suggestions to Dr. Collins about the school. They will also discuss where students need help, more support, and community service for their graduation requirements.
“I’m excited because I want to meet the students [and] it’s a tradition. I want to continue that, and it should be lots of fun,” said Principal Dr. Connie Collins.
The Tribe members for the 2013-2014 school year will choose the members for the 2014-2015 school year, so juniors and prospective seniors who want to join should continue to work hard.
