Intramural sports allow students to participate in the sport of their choice without prior experience in that specific sport, and are offered throughout the United States in colleges, high schools, and middle schools. Unfortunately, Seminole High School does not offer intramural sports, but they do offer freshman, junior-varsity, and varsity sports for students to participate in.
Coach Mike Powers explained, “We don’t have intramural sports because we offer 24/7 sports here at school […] it’s hard to schedule (intramural sports) during practices […] but if we see some interest we can discuss it with the athletic department and the people in the county office.”
While high schools generally don’t offer intramural sports, it’s an opportunity for college students to participate in a sport that they have no experience in. The schedule is more flexible than that of a varsity or JV teams would be but can interfere with some activities.
Mr. Nick Pavgouzas, who played intramural sports in college, said, “(Some pros were) Involvement on campus, staying in shape, and building friendships. (Some cons were) interfered with class (such as) skipping class for a game.”
Without the stress of high level competition such as regular sports, intramural sports-IM sports according to players- avoid that stress and allow the players to have fun while trying something new.
Sophomore Jennifer Caputo thought, “It’d be fun to try something new especially since it’d just be for fun!”
Intramural sports provide a fantastic opportunity for students to get their daily exercise and to continue a sport out of high school or trying a new sport for the first time.
Pavgouzas said, “I would absolutely encourage my students to get involved in Intramural Sports in college, at any level.”
There are generally three different types of levels in intramural sports depending on your experience. Typically, there are competitive, intermediate, and recreational.
Though Seminole High School doesn’t offer this yet, we have plenty of options to choose from. Check out the athletic page on the Seminole High School website and get involved!
