‘NOLES BOYS VOLLEYBALL TO FINISH SEASON STRONG
April 20, 2016
With the volleyball season coming to a close, the team continues to work hard. Currently sporting a one win to nine loss record for JV and a three win to 12 loss record for Varsity, they hope to garner a few more wins before ending their season this month.
Despite their record, the team’s situation isn’t as dire as it may seem. Their schedule began with some of the top teams in their district. Those losses at the beginning of the season may have affected their spirits, and led to the amount of losses they have.
The Varsity team still has a chance to make it to the district competition due to the way that volleyball records are organized. Games played are either district or conference, with only district games counting toward participating in the district competition. Only four teams play in the district tournament. Currently, Varsity has a one win to five losses district record. Winning the rest of their district games would put them at a four wins to four losses District record, which would qualify them to play in the competition.
Coach Beth Corso says, “I hope [the losses] give them a big added incentive. We dropped a game vs. Spruce Creek a few weeks ago that we should have won, so we just have to play our game and hope for the best.”
Corso says that having a five wins to three losses record going into the district competition would give them an almost guaranteed spot, whereas a 4-4 record would make them susceptible to being disqualified from the tournament.
“We started off with a very hard schedule, which knocked our morale down a bit,” says Varsity member, Robert Lommerse. “Having those games made us better and more resilient. They gave us an incentive to practice harder and train harder.”
According to Corso, she places the boys team at third or fourth in district, and gives them a good chance of winning the two remaining games and qualifying for the district tournament.
“We still have a few games this season,” says JV sophomore Zachary Anderson, “We just need to finish [the season] off strong.”
Even with their current record, volleyball still looks toward the rest of its season in a positive light. Their last home game will be April 21; tickets are five dollars at the door.
