Starting off the season with new talent, the Seminole water polo team has much hope for this season. With one month to go, the teams has a lot to boast about: the girls are 7-2 while the boys are 6-3.
“So far, so good,” said coach Anthony Ackerson. “We are training hard for the District tournament.”
Last season, the water polo team won Districts through its hard work and talent. This season, they hope to achieve the same, even with new faces starting on the team. This year the captains are Chad Mylin, Kristen Huether, Madison Potter, and Hayley Reynolds.
Mylin said, “Last season we probably had more talent […] but this year we want it more and are so far having a great season.”
Water polo is no walk in the park, however. This sport takes dedication and continuous training to succeed. Practices are everyday until five and games are played every week. The players love the challenge, though.
Huether expressed, “I like how mentally/physically challenging it is. You’re always trying to do better. You never reach a point and are satisfied; there is always room for improvement.”
Water polo requires constant effort. One of the toughest challenges that come with this sport, however, is the officiating.
Ackerson explained, “It’s a hard sport to referee, because so much happens underneath the water. The officials are usually pretty good, but it can be hard to understand when you’re not getting a foul call that you should get. But we teach the players to just play through it, and to always accept the call and move on.”
The team hopes for the best as the season wraps up. The ‘Noles water polo team continues to make Seminole proud of their accomplishments and wins due to their efforts and great coaching.
