After the 2012 Summer Olympics, people all around the globe were already anticipating the excitement of the next celebration of athleticism in 2016. The games will be set in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to August 21, 2016.
It was announced on October 2, 2009, that the Games would take place in Rio and marked the beginning of a new journey for Brazil with great reward, but also great consequences if anything were to go wrong.
Junior Carly Mclendon expressed, “I’m excited for these Games, but I’m hoping they live up to the last Olympics as well!”
The developments for these Games are monstrous and take years to complete. There will be over 100,000 people involved in the building and organization of the Games, including 70,000 volunteers. Millions of people will attend the Games to watch, coming from all around the city, country, and world.
As for the athletes, more than 10,500 people will be competing from an estimated 205 nations all across the world. The athletes will battle it out in front of tons of media professionals, sports fans, and tourists coming to watch.
Junior Seantrell Nichols commented, “I’m always excited for the Summer Olympics, but I’m even more excited that it’s being held in Rio; it’s beautiful there!”
Besides all the excitement though, there is also plenty of worry surrounding the Games. Since they will be held in Brazil, concern has arisen. The country has been known to have many recent acts of violence, including the murder of a referee of a lost soccer match, and a police helicopter being shot down in one of the country’s notorious drug wars.
Freshman Sara Cushing said, “It’s a little nerve-wracking knowing the Games are in a place where so many acts of violence have taken place!”
However, the people in Rio will continue to look forward to the bright road ahead, and hopefully, the 2016 Olympic Games will make history!
