In October, we wear pink.
Celebrated every October, this month is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness and educating the public on the importance of yearly checkups. Staring in 1985, the color for this month is pink as to match the pink ribbon that represents Breast Cancer Awareness.
This month advocates for education and funding while as celebrating the strength of the survivors. The American Cancer Society hosts a yearly event called Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in which participants complete a three to five mile non competitive walk. This event takes place across multiple location including right here in our own backyard! Each year Lake Eola is decked out in pink with stalls everywhere before the event to create this lively nature. Additionally, participants are also asked to wear pink to raise awareness and make it known why they are walking. Before the walk begins, each person helps to raise money that is donated towards this cause.
“It’s more than just a walk, it’s a movement.”
This is the motto for the American Cancer Society and their overall goal in this event. This month allows for survivors to share their stories as well as inspire others currently facing this disease. It prompts early detection, a process that saves lives and increases the survival rate. No one should have to feel alone during this journey and that is the message the organization hopes to share. By encouraging conversation about this disease, it reduces the stigma around it and breaks down these barriers.
This year’s walk will take place on October 26th so be sure to look out for photos! If you would like to donate to this noble cause, you can do so at this link.
