Since 1996, April has been the official month for the creative writing called poetry. The celebration during the month was first created by the Academy of American Poets.
The month is marked by the combination of numerous jobs such as publishers, editors, authors, librarians, and others involved in writing. People then celebrate the month by bringing recognizing poetry and its composition.
“Poetry is different from long stories. You can analyze it yourself and there’s a lot of imagery. You can write it any way, it’s very simple and easy to do. So little words have so much meaning,” said freshman Ahyeon Choe.
During poetry month, people can choose to celebrate in many different ways. There can be the dedication of papers or reports to poetry. Even the reading and sharing of poems can be interpreted as participating in poetry month.
On the subject of poetry month, sophomore Bree Closs said, “I think it’s good because it helps open other people’s eyes to poetry and it might help them appreciate it.”
However, many people choose to celebrate in a more traditional way; by making their own poems to share.
Making poems can be done anywhere or anytime. One can simply share poetry through the less traditional way of putting poetry on the Internet.
One site that can be used for poetry month in particular is Teen Ink. This is a popular website designed specifically for teenagers to write about anything they desire. It can be accessed through the simple touch of a button and quick sign up. On Teen Ink you can talk to other teen publishers, explore different types of writing, and share self written work.
It allows teens to read writing, comment on it, and even have the chance to get published in the Teen Ink monthly magazine issue. It is a print magazine that can be ordered yearly and contains picked pieces to be featured for each category.
Operating through a username, Teen Ink allows the user to publish any writing wanted. There are categories for novels, short stories, poetry, songs, and more. This is a great way for the writer to use Poetry Month to its full advantage.
“That sounds like a great way for people to express themselves,” said junior Brad Dreffer.
Writing on this site does allow for not only recognition but self expression and the ability to share opinions and feelings through writing. It’s a great experience for any teen and something exciting to take place in.
This is a great site for poetry month. Not only can poetry be created, but it can be shared, and published. Teen Ink allows poetry month to be taken a step farther than normal, and allows teen’s direct participation in the event. It is worth checking out and can bring fun to the portrayal of poetry as a whole.
