The Science National Honor Society (SNHS) has arrived at Seminole High School and has much in store for students. The new club plans to focus on community service aimed toward the science field.

The club has just gotten started. They are going to aim on giving back to the community, while incorporating science. Members will be participating in events, such as tutoring Seminole and Millennium students in science and volunteering with science organizations, such as the Orlando Science Center.

Junior Pareena Sharma, the founder of SNHS, says, “I wanted to bring this club to Seminole, because I have always had a strong passion for science and I wanted to be able to find students who are just as passionate as me and help them incorporate science into the student experience.”

To apply, students must complete the online member application, as well as submit a recommendation from both a science teacher and a non-science teacher. Recommendation letters should be submitted to the sponsor, Ms. Robinson. There is also a gpa requirement; students must maintain a 3.0 unweighted gpa to be considered. Applications for the 2015-2016 year have ended and members have already been announced and an induction ceremony was held on March 28, 2016.

This year, there are approximately 80 members. They each have responsibilities to uphold, such as volunteering and reaching a goal of 10 hours for this quarter. In addition, members must individually tutor kids in 90-minute sessions in a science subject.

Junior Arige Shaukat says, “I have always had a strong interest in science, so I was eager to apply when I heard of this new club. I am looking forward to all the science related activities we may do, as well as being able to incorporate volunteer work with science.”

Plans were arranged for members to attend science, technology, engineering and mathematics day (STEM Day) in order to interactively help students broaden their knowledge of science. Members attended STEM Day on Friday, April 8 at the University of Central Florida (UCF).

National Science Honor Society will bring many opportunities to enhance the student experience greatly.
