As spring break began, the temperatures climbed high and so did the spirits of Seminole’s Model UN (MUN) team. From March 14th to 16th, Florida International University held its annual FIMUN conference, with 15 committees, ranging from pressing current issues to Lighting McQueen. Armed with stacks of research and mountains of snacks, our delegates hopped on the 4 hour bus ride to Miami to compete.
Our team put their diplomatic skills to the test at FIMUN, tackling this year’s theme: Diplomacy in a Divided World. With global tensions at an all-time high—both in real life and in their committees—our delegates faced the challenge of bridging ideological gaps, forging alliances, and working toward meaningful solutions.
For the General Assemblies (GA), the committees were the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Women (UN Women), and the United Nations Trusteeship Council, Some of the Crisis Committees were;: X Marks the Spot: Twitter Board of Directors, 2022, It’s Getting Spicy In Here: The War for Arrakis, and Thistles and Thrones: The Fall of the Golden Horde, in addition to a few more.
There were quite a few specialized agencies, such as the São Paulo Forum, the United Nations Office on Legal Affairs (UNOLA), and Bombs Dropped: Vault 37 Board of Designees.
Ritu Mehta, an IB sophomore and officer of Seminole’s MUN team, shares her experience:
“FIMUN was a really fun conference and an overall good experience getting to meet new students in Miami. I was representing Austria in the UN Women committee, where we talked about various global concerns like GBV and period poverty.”
This was the first time our MUN team went to FIMUN, so it was a new experience for all of the delegates that attended.
As for awards, Seminole swept the competition, winning many awards and representing the school well.
