The sky was still dark and full of stars by the time our seniors began to make their way towards the Seminole High School (SHS) football stadium on August 28th. Blankets and snacks in hand, students arrived extra early to campus for a very special tradition reserved for our graduating classes; senior sunrise.
Senior sunrise is a symbolic event that marks the beginning of a class’s senior year, where students gather on the football field to watch the sunrise. It commemorates the start of the students’ last school year, the beginning of the end of their high school lives. This year, we celebrated the graduating class of 2025.
The gates to the football stadium opened at around 6:15 a.m, and after walking inside, students were led over to a snack table provided by the school’s senior class council, where everyone was allowed to take something to eat as they watched the sky brighten out on the field.
They began to spread out across a portion of the field, groups of friends joining blankets together and mingling excitedly with each other. Others began to take photos in front of the colorful sky, and large handmade frames were passed around so that students could gather in groups to snap fun pictures. Music was also provided, and people were up and about socializing and chatting with one another about the exciting year ahead. Not only was the event itself memorable, but it was an opportunity for fellow seniors to get to know one another and let loose.
“It was a really fun time,” Tori Carman says. “Just getting to relax and watch everyone around me having fun was nice, since we don’t [always] have events like that.”
Senior sunrise is only the first out of many senior traditions that will be occurring year round. As a parallel to the early tradition, senior sunset will take place at the very end of the school year, where seniors will join together and witness the sunset at the end of their high school journey.
Stay tuned for more updates on senior events happening this year. As always, go Noles!
