With the end of senior year fast approaching, seniors take part in numerous activities with a few standing out above the rest. Pep rallies, events, and trips are conducted in honor of these seniors. However, before these events take place, to get the seniors spirits up, a spirit week occurs with innovative and crazy themes. Pulling out the craziest outfits, seniors go all out as their high school path soon comes to an end.
Monday: Kindergarten Day
Remembering when the seniors started out, the spirit week kicks off with kindergarten day. Dressing up as their younger selves, seniors are pulled back into the past. From colorful overalls, sparkly light up shoes, and playful pigtails, seniors embrace the past reliving their early childhood.
Tuesday: Teacher Swap
After revisiting their younger selves, seniors move on to honoring those who supported them throughout high school. Seniors are encouraged to dress up as their favorite teacher, wearing outfits inspired by the teachers who left a long lasting impression on them throughout high school. IB Senior, Zia Yusufali, explains “I’m going to dress up as Mr.Stump. He’s known for wearing this purple hoodie because it’s his favorite color. So I’m going to try and wear a purple top similar to that color with blue jeans.”
Wednesday: Senior citizen day
Shifting from the present to the future, seniors embrace their later years by dressing up as the elderly. From old canes and grey wigs to large glasses, the seniors pull out every stop, with some even wearing nightdresses or large dentures.
Thursday: Future Career day
On day 4, seniors are encouraged to dress up as their future professions, coming together to dress up as what they intend to be. Whether it’s doctors in lab coats, astronauts in helmets or tools on workers, seniors showcase what they hope to achieve in their future. “I’m looking forward to future career day. I was going to wear navy scrubs because I’m going into healthcare,“ describes IB senior Manasvi Ballamudi.
Friday: Field day
Taking a trip back down memory lane, one key memory many seniors possess is field day. Composed of competitive races, thrilling games, and rewards such as popsicles, many have a fond memory of this day. Recreating the event and the nostalgia that comes with it, the last day of spirit week is dedicated to field day. Consisting once again of water guns, vibrant paint, chalk, and more, with seniors encouraged to wear white to show off the vibrant colors. These shirts are sometimes even kept as a memory of senior year with handprints and signatures from their friends.
Ziafatemah Yusufalli, an IB senior, exclaims: “I’m excited for spirit week but the day I’m most looking forward to is probably Friday! I’m excited for field day, because I’ve heard from graduates that it’s an enjoyable event and a fun experience. There’s also a lot of games which are pretty fun.”
Wrapping up senior year this week serves to encourage students of their future while also reminding them of the memories they made along the way. Reflecting on their experiences from freshman to senior year, this week captures the nostalgia and excitement. Bringing all the seniors together, it gives everyone one final chance to make memories in senior year with their friends before everyone goes their separate paths. Filled with excitement, nostalgia, and anticipation for their future, this week serves as a goodbye and gets students in the spirit for the upcoming events such as prom, grad bash, and finally graduation.
