Seminole’s food pantry is open to all students and anyone in the Seminole community. The purpose of this program is to assist local children and families in need and it is located in a storage area of the community room.

Secretary Patsy Guy says, “The food pantry’s great to have because there are so many people who need it. By having a food pantry, they at least have enough food to eat.”

Shelves are full of a variety of food, which mostly consists of canned and preserved food. Most of the food was obtained through the ROTC food drive during Thanksgiving.

Additional food is donated to the pantry by a variety of people. Students, parents and staff members of SHS provide donations and many clubs and organizations outside of school contribute as well. Some teachers encourage their students to donate by assigning school projects or offering extra credit that requires them to do so.

Julie Miller says, “The thing that amazes me the most is that the teachers and students are the ones that actually contribute the most to the pantry. I have seen students bring in baskets full of food and stock it all on the shelves.”

Most of the food is given to Families in Transition (FIT) and they are the first ones served. After that, food is supplied on a firs-come-first-serve basis.

The food pantry has been a part of Seminole for about six years. It was started by former administrator Micky Reynolds who began doing different drives and giveaways.

Sophomore Stone Posley says, “I’m so glad that we have such a wonderful food pantry; it provides so much for those who really need it.”

The SHS food pantry is a benefit to all students and families in and around Sanford. With the help of the community, the food pantry can reach out and help a wider range of people.
