On Saturday, February 22, SHS honored the past with its annual Black History Show. The show was held in the auditorium at 7 pm with an admission fee of $5. In the same week, performances will be held during first, second, and third period.
Last month the Black History Committee distributed flyers and gave presentations to celebrate Black History Month and advertise the show. The Black History Committee is a group of SHS students seeking to celebrate bring black history at Seminole throughout the month of February.
The president of the committee is senior Diamond Hill.
“I am the president of the committee so I work closely with Miss Guy and Mr. Register to be sure that the dates of rehearsals and meetings go smoothly,” said Hill. “I also helped orchestrate the auditions to ensure that the show would be phenomenal.”
The show presents a variety of talented acts focused on black history and features dance, poetry, piano, and various musical performances, which include African-American musicals, jazz, R&B, and hip hop.
The committee has spent weeks designing themed decorations and planning rehearsals.
“I’m in charge of stage set-up,” said junior Ciara Howell, committee member. “What I do is I have the flags, and we painted those to go onstage, and I decorated the banner to go in the lobby and basically the auditorium when you walk in to it.”
The committee members each have been dedicated to managing different parts of the show so that the performance will be of the highest quality.
“We have weekly meetings set in place, we are all assigned to a different project such as stage setup and advertising, and we all do our part to assist in making the show the very best it can be by putting forth effort and ideas,” said Hill.
Auditions for the show were held earlier in January. The chosen acts have been practicing and preparing for weeks.
“During class we practice every day first period, and then we have afterschool rehearsals that we have to go to,” said senior Torri Richardson, a member of Gospel Choir. “I’ve performed in the Black History Show for the past three years, so it’s kind of like an annual thing that we do in Gospel Choir.”
The performers, committee, students, and staff grow in anticipation as SHS’s annual Black History Show comes near.
“I’m really excited to see how everything comes together with the stage setup, the decorations, [and] the performances,” said Howell. “I’m just ready to see everything that we worked for.”
