Mrs. Misty Beasley has been a teacher for 10 years, all of which she has taught at Seminole, and this is her first nomination for Teacher of the Year. She is qualified to teach middle grade mathematics grades 5-9, and she currently teaches Algebra I and College Preparatory Mathematics.
Mrs. Beasley is very happy about becoming Teacher of the Year. “I was very surprised—very, very surprised. I was grateful for my colleagues picking me; I thought it was an honor they picked me for Teacher of the Year,” she said.
Many of her students feel she is a very qualified teacher, including freshman Joshua Martinez.
Martinez said, “She’s an amazing teacher. She’s really helped me improve from my transition from middle school.”
Nominations for Teacher of the year began October 9, 2013, and the following day the five finalists were announced. This year the finalists included Mrs. Misty Beasley, Ms. Patti Boggs, Ms. Natalie Lauber, Ms. Nicole Poorbaugh, and Ms. Melody Sweigert. The teacher of the year was announced on November 20, 2013 during third period.
The teacher of the year and nominees are given gifts bags with donations from local business owners. This year over $1000 was given to Seminole to put in the gift bags by restaurants, Publix, and local businesses.
Many nominees are supportive of Ms. Beasley and wish her well as teacher of the year, including Ms. Nicole Poorbaugh and Ms. Natalie Lauber.
“To be nominated by your colleagues—let alone to win—is an incredible honor… I’m glad she had the opportunity to be recognized,” said Ms. Lauber.
Ms. Poorbaugh also supports Mrs. Beasley and said, “[Mrs. Beasley] has been teaching for a long time and I thin everyone respects her on campus and the job she does. I hope she does well at the county level because I think she’s a good representation—a really good representation—of Seminole High School.”
Mrs. Beasley will be competing for county Teacher of the Year on March 13, 2014. If she wins she will move on to state; the date of the state competition has yet to be announced.
