Seminole High School throughout the years has had quite the diverse group of classes: from the Creative Writing class to the Team Sports class, it’s obvious that this school has many different interests. But next year, Seminole High might just have one of the most different classes out there: a square dancing classes!
Because of Florida’s location, the United States Square Dancers has offered to help spread the word about square dancing by giving a few schools in Florida a square dancing class of their own, one of those schools being SHS! Our school has agreed to take this opportunity and educate the students about the fundamentals of square dancing.
Other than square dancing, the class will also feature many other different types of unknown dances, such as contra, clogging, and line dancing. All of these dances put together in this class are supposed to show that these are wholesome enjoyable and fun things to do, and that they show unity!
Sophomore Abby Smiffen said “I’m really excited about this class; it seems like a great opportunity to learn something new and to bond with different people!”
However, there is one major decision still waiting to be made: whether or not the class will be a math or physicial education credit. It could be considered an physical education credit because of the many different lessons it teaches, but it could also be considered a math credit because of the rhytmic, time-based concept of the dance itself.
Junior Tommy Atkins said “I think it should be considered an AP credit so you can get a higher GPA all from having a good time.”
With the help of the USDA (United Square Dancers of America), Seminole High School will get recognized as a distinct school in Florida. The purpose of this class (besides bringing together many students) is to spread the enjoyment of square dancing and to educate the masses about the experience of square dancing.
Freshman Jennifer Alexander said “I’m definitely going to apply for this class, I’ve never heard of many people square dancing, so I’m going to try to be one of the first to spread this around!”
This class will be beneficial to many aspects of your high school career, so make sure to apply next year!
