Seminole High School provides many sport opportunities to allow students to get in shape and be active. While exercise is an important part in staying fit, following a healthy diet is just as important.
Coach Larry Bell offered some advice when it comes to weight lifting and diet: “eat every three to four hours and toning equals more reps and lighter weights, while, bulking up requires more weights and less reps.” He also advised, “Lift within your means, don’t do too much. Quality over quantity; use a spotter when needed and pain-free lifting. Soreness is one thing but you shouldn’t over do it.”
For the athletes at Seminole High School, the weight room can be an important factor in their performance. Several machines and weights are provided for the students to use.
Junior Daniel Greenhouse explained, “During the [football] season I do low weight just to keep my muscles in shape. I do upper body on Tuesdays and Sundays, and lower body on Wednesdays and Saturdays.”
Besides working on weight lifting, diet is another part of staying healthy. A diet for working out and lifting weights especially requires protein, carbohydrates, good calories, and unsaturated fats.
Junior Ashley Williams told what her workout routine and diet includes: “It’s a whole lot of pushups, squats, sit-ups, and some bench pressing. I eat as much as I can eat: healthy food and junk, but I bring a bag full of food to eat throughout the day. […] But out of everything I eat, the most is apples and potatoes.”
Weight lifting is a great exercise for bulking up and toning, but students such as sophomore Alexa Chen run to get their daily exercise in.
Chen said, “I just try to eat healthy and I run like five miles a day, six days a week. [I eat] tons of fruit. I don’t really eat chips or junk food, and I never drink soda.”
