The Seminole HIgh School (SHS) 2023 Teacher of The Year was awarded to Corey Ellis, on Tuesday Oct. 3rd.
The teacher of the year is a teacher nominated award in which teachers of (SHS) nominate 6 teachers, which are then voted on by teachers.
“Administration and staff don’t vote, we have nothing to do with it, teachers vote,” explains Seminole High School principal Michael Pfieffer.
The 2023 nominees were Tammie Gordon, Ushanda Johnson, Dr. Kristen Springfield, Guy Stump, LaTonya Thomas, and Corey Ellis.
“I wouldn’t say I was expecting it, but I’m not super surprised. I mean there’s always a lot of other deserving teachers on the list,” expresses Eliis.
Ellis is a 7-time (SHS) teacher of the year finalist, making him familiar with the possibility of being awarded teacher of the year.
Ellis has been teaching for 18 years and is currently a BC Calculus teacher and the IB coordinator at Seminole High School. Despite his impressive credentials, Ellis maintains a modest recipient of the Teacher of The Year award.
“I’m just really thankful to have my family here and get some recognition, and be representing the school,” says Ellis.
Ellis takes great pride in his involvement with Seminole High School and providing a challenging work environment to help students grow through the IB program. He is also deeply passionate in teaching his BC Calculus class and promotes active learning while addressing common misconceptions through his lessons.
After receiving his award, Ellis enjoyed a cake with his family and a beautiful bouquet of balloons while humbly appreciating his well deserved recognition.
