The event took place on January 5th, 2025, commending the diverse talents across the film industry and some of the best movies and shows of 2024. Marked by its classy red carpet, featuring stars like Cynthia Erivo, Angelina Jolie, and many more, the ceremony was brimming with anticipation.
Loey Page Sydes, a sophomore in IB, shares her opinion of the recent event: “Personally, I thought last year was really biased. Plus, last year’s comedian kept making poorly timed jokes and offended a bunch of people. Nikki Glaser, in my opinion, definitely did better.”
Nikki Glaser did a wonderful job breaking the ice, with her lighthearted jokes easing the anticipation of the crowd and succeeding in making everyone forget the Golden Globes’s negative image surrounding comedians.
Something unforgettable, though, was the amazing movies and entertainment that came out of 2024.
The Brutalist, directed by Brady Corbet, brought home three awards, receiving significant attention. The movie features an architect moving to America with the intentions to regain control over his life, creating a stunning and captivating story well deserving of its trophies.
Emilia Pérez, a Spanish musical, accumulated an impressive total of four awards, including “Best Film” and “Best original song.” Zoe Saldaña also received “Best Supporting Actress” for her outstanding performance in the film.
Despite predictions, the movie adaptation of “Wicked” only secured the special award “Cinematic and Box Office Achievement,” a formidable achievement nonetheless. Wicked has made approximately $634.4 million since its release, surpassing Mamma Mia! In becoming the top-grossing broadway adaptation.
Demi Moore, Fernanda Torres, and Sebastian Stan were all recognized for their talents, with Demi Moore winning her very first award in her 43 years of acting.
This year’s Golden Globes emphasises the time and passion that goes into curating entertainment, with many firsts, setting a high bar for the rest of the year. Hopefully, 2025 shall be a year to remember for us all as well.
