As the school year heads into spring, students across the country are getting ready for AP exams. These tests, given in May, can be stressful, but they also offer a chance to earn college credit. Many students are studying hard, hoping to do their best.
Some students have their ways of preparing. I spoke with two high schoolers to learn about their study methods.
Trevin Le, a sophomore taking AP Psychology, relies on flashcards to review important facts: “I make flashcards for everything,” he said. “For history, I write down key events and dates. For biology, I focus on vocabulary and processes.”
He also uses online resources. “Quizlet helps a lot because I can practice with different study modes,” he explained. Trevin studies a little every day to stay on track instead of cramming. “I set a timer for 30 minutes and focus on one subject at a time,” he said. “It helps me remember things better.”
Manha Sheikh, an IB sophomore taking AP Lang, AP World, and AP Psych prefers studying with friends. “My friends and I meet twice a week to go over tough topics,” she said. “Explaining things to each other makes it easier to understand.”
Manha also practices with past exams. “AP questions can be tricky, so I take old tests to get used to the format,” she said. She believes that balancing work and rest is key. “It’s important to take breaks. I make sure to sleep well and do something fun, like playing basketball, so I don’t get overwhelmed.”
Many students also use school resources to help them prepare. AP teachers often hold review sessions, and some schools offer tutoring programs. “Some of my teachers do after-school study groups, and they really help,” Manha said. “It’s nice to have extra support from teachers and classmates when studying gets overwhelming.”
Even though Trevin and Manha study differently, both have the same goal, to feel confident on test day. Whether using flashcards, study groups, or practice tests, every student needs to find what works best for them.
Teachers also encourage students to stay consistent. “Studying a little bit every day is better than cramming the night before,” they advise.
With exams coming up soon, students are doing their best to prepare. While the process can be tough, putting in the effort now can lead to great results in May.
