With the start of the 2013 football season Seminole chose a new head coach. Coach Kerry Wiggins Sr. gladly accepted this position after 12 years at Seminole as an assistant coach for basketball and football before starting his 13th with this new position. This hasty change may have caused concern, but after the first game those worries were quickly put to rest after the varsity football team’s victory.
As he was the number one quarterback in Florida his senior year, it should come as no surprise that Coach Wiggins knows the game inside and out. Wiggins said, “[I was] born and raised here in Sanford and graduated ’91 at Seminole.”
He later went to Georgia Military College for his Associate of Arts Degree before proceeding to Savannah State University for his graduate studies in recreation and parks administration. After this he later returned to Seminole to teach and coach.
Junior Gage Krull said, “Coach [Wiggins] has been a member of the Seminole High School family for his entire life and he knows what’s best for our football family. He knows football and he believed teamwork is a necessity.”
The transition from assistant coach to head coach can be difficult, but for Coach Wiggins it was a smooth transition. He stated, “It still hasn’t sunk in being coach. I know a lot of the guys and for some I even went to school with their parents. It’s not a huge transition and I have a lot of good guys making the transition easy.”
The football team knew Coach Wiggins before his promotion and some have had an in-depth experience with his coaching techniques.
Varsity captain and senior Daniel Greenhouse said, “I love Coach Wiggins. He was my freshman basketball coach and I think he was the best choice for head captain.”
Junior Norma Davis, a varsity cheerleader, said, “I have met him and he’s really funny and a good guy. They’ve [the varsity football team] been performing better.”
Seminole’s football team is sure to turn out well with Coach Wiggins on top of his game. He is not only a Seminole alumnus and a family man, but a funny and personable guy as well. Make sure to attend Seminole’s football games and get a firsthand experience with our team and Coach Wiggins!
